You have an inner ear problem, the popping is the change in pressure between inner and outer ear. Flying will exacerbate it, water will also cause squidgy ear noises. If it becomes painful you must see a doctor, because ear infections affect the balance of your whole body.
It’s probable that the balance tubes are blocked and can’t let the equalisation happen. In serious cases people have little shunt tubes inserted to temporarily assist in this process.
After every dive trip I always get sinus trouble, congestion and ear trouble. I usually take decongestants before every dive as it helps me equalize. Probably wouldn’t hurt to visit a doc. and get checked out. If you let it go to long it can just cause trouble down the road.
as for the ear candles, total myth. Don’t waste your time.

Try a Chinese ear candle. Likely found at a alternative medicine site or health food retailer.
