oh god how i miss it. my dad was stationed on Kadena, and my brother and i got dive lessons. i remember going to the seawall off gate 1 and taking my test there.
i was young so it was alittle scarry. but now that i have grown up, i can appreciate the experience i had.
anyone remember toilet bowl?
i know that was a place my dad went alot.
Okinawa is beautiful. I went snorkelling on Tokashiki, a small island in the Kerama Islands, just off Okinawa. Been there twice. Coral, powder soft beaches, torquoise seas, peace ….. bliss!!! Oh, and Karate!!!
anyone who’s interested in diving may also find the book “Scuba Diving & Snorkeling for Dummies” useful. it explains about free diving, special breathing techniques, emergency procedures, how to avoid the bends, how to handle dive anxiety etc
I used to teach SCUBA diving there back in 2002-2003 and was in the water all over the prefecture nearly every day. Although the waters have been heavily over-fished and some of the reefs around the very popular dive sites (Maeda Point and Sunabe Seawall) are nothing to write home about, the reefs around the the northern part of Okinawa-honto and the Kerama Islands are in very good shape.
